No.9 for England is Bent…

…Darren Bent, and I’m delighted. With a 25 goal tally with a team like Sunderland the striker thoroughly deserves his place in the England World Cup provisional 30 man squad. It’s good to see players like Joe Hart, Adam Johnson, and James Milner in the line up as well.

But wait, whats that? Oh its Heskey, AGAIN! 3 goals in 31 games and 2 assists seems to be enough to get him into the World Cup squad but 14 in 38 with 4 assists isn’t enough for Bobby Zamora. Yes Rooney has been quoted as hinting he would rather Heskey up front with him but with only two assists all season he’s about as useful as an conviently placed crossbar or a strategically postioned defender’s leg.

Others will say ‘ah sure Zamora is injured’, and I would reply ‘yes, and so is Gareth Barry but he’s still in the squad when the likes of Ashley Young, who had a great season, is excluded.’ Carlton Cole would have even been better than Heskey.

Heskey seen here dancing ironically to Damien Rice's 'You Shouldn't be Here'

And I suspose Carrick is just making up the numbers. Even though he was playing in the Championship with Newcastle, Kevin Nolan, with his 17 goals and 5 assists in 44 games sounded like a far better bet than Carrick with his 30 games, 2 goals, and 1 assist.

But alas, there will always be controversy when the England World Cup squad is picked and I’ll put my hands up and say ‘I was wrong’ if during the competition Heskey and Carrick manage to link up and score an unbelievable goal (it would literally be unbelievable, probably after a bicycle kick-cross from the hobbling Gareth Barry). But in the meantime its all shaping up nicely. With only 29 days till kick off in Johannesburg when Mexico take on South Africa the excitement is building and I for one, cannot wait (unlike Young, Zamora, Cole, and Nolan who will have to wait…another 4 years).

Full squad list:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green;

Defenders: Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock;

Capello will announce his final 23 man squad on the 1st June.
