Electric Picnic line up – The ‘other’ bands

Here’s a quick look at some of the ‘other’ bands who are playing at the Electric Picnic this year. We all know the likes of Massive Attack, LCD Soundsystem, Roxy Music, Leftfield, UNKLE, Hot Chip, and Booka Shade but how about the ‘lesser’ known bands. Of course, these bands are still massive in their own right, some of them legendary, some relatively new, but lets highlight them anyway because they’re the type of bands that might slip under some people’s radars.

How about starting off with a 70’s electric funk band? This track here was one of their most successful recordings and went on to be sampled by Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash, as well as De La Soul.

This is the Canadian electronic musician Daniel Snaith who goes by the stage name of Caribou. He usually plays with a band though. Last FM desribes his ever changing music as “electronic psychedelia, krautrock rhythms, and breakbeat drums [which] creates a swirling , lush, musical panorama.”

Archie Bronson Outfit

This English three piece blues rock band have been around for about 20 years but have only released two albums. Their last one Derdang Derdang released in 2006 has recieved great reviews though.

The Redneck Manifesto

One of Ireland’s finest musical offspring The Redneck Manifesto deserve all the appraisal they’ve been getting lately. Their tight, intricate, hypnotic sounds have won them many fans and I’d say this year at the picnic they could be one of the highlights.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

These guys will defiently put on a show you won’t regret going to. Eight horn players, one drummer and one hell of a lively performance – another potential highlight of the weekend.

Fusing funk, soul, and hip hop, Breakestra are known as the original funk orchestra. They’ll be playing the picnic with Chali 2na whose distinctively deep voice rapped with Jurassic 5. I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing these guys.

Other bands and performers that might be interesting to have a quick look at are Radiohead’s drummer Phil Selway who is doing his solo stuff. And if your into him you might like to have a look at Adrian Crowley and Villagers too. Of course you don’t even need to be reminded of Beardyman and Mr. Scruff.
